So, here it is - a post to save you a bit of sanity.
Here you will find the differences between the various types of cloth diapers, some of my recommendations, and links to online stores.
Prefolds
Pros:- Trim
- CHEAP
- Simple
- "It's like doing paperwork" in Alex's words.
- Learning Curve
- Not very absorbent (must change frequently)
- Need a cover
www.greenmountaindiapers.com (I've read that these are the best. They apparently fit really well, so you don't have to adjust the rise by folding.)
www.jilliansdrawers.com
www.abbyslane.com
The last two are fantastic websites to buy a great selection of different diapers. I've used them both.
Prefolds are probably what you think of when you think "cloth diapers".

They are nice, thick pieces of absorbent fabric, (traditionally cotton) that you fold and snap on with a Snappi (one of the best inventions EVER!)
Afterward you put on a pretty, colorful cover (can be wool or with PUL liner)
Contours

Pros:- Trim
- Cheap
- Easier to put on than Prefolds
- Great for newborns, at least I thought so.
- More leaks.
- Must wash covers more often.
- Not very absorbent
Pockets

Pros:- Easy to use
- Varying degrees of absorbency
- Perfect for outings
- Simple for babysitters, grandparents...etc
- More expensive
- Frumpier
Recommendations:
- Bumgenius - The #1 selling diaper on the market. These diapers are fantastic and they work well for naps too! I use the 3.0 one-size Bum Genius dipes almost exclusively when we're out and about. SOOO many stores carry them.
- Green Acre Designs - Some of you have been eyeing my beautiful plum colored diaper with the words "Sweet Girl"embroidered on the back. Look no further- the most gorgeous, unique pockets EVER!

Pros:- SUPER DUPER CUTE!
- Very Trim
- Varying degrees of absorbency
- Ideal for newborns (if you can find a small enough size)
- It's a shame that you have to put covers over the cuteness
- Can be more expensive since you have to buy "sizes" (although you can also find "one-size fitteds"
- Sometimes lots of snaps can be confusing and time consuming
Fitteds are my favorite at the moment. I love all the choices of prints that you can find. Plus, you can also find some very very absorbent dipes out there.
Recommendations:
- Kissaluvs fitteds size 0 for newborns. (Jillians Drawers or Abbeyslane both carry them)
- Muttaqins 3-step-rise or fitteds. (3-step-rise are one-size diapers. Translation: You have an excuse to pay more for these expensive, but ridiculously CUTE diapers. WARNING! the snaps can be confusing) www.muttaqinbaby.com
- Baby Behinds (Abbeyslane carries them) - My favorite nighttime diaper along with
- Cricketts Diapers www.crickettsdiapers.com for naps.
- Hyena Cart www.hyenacart.com is full of amazing diaper stores owned by Work-at-Home Moms. My favorites are: Bagshot Row Bamboo, Arabesque Baby and The Fanciful Fanny. I have heard that Clothmopolitan's diapers are really well-made, and their prints are to die for!
Flats are the diapers that our mamas put on us when we were babies. They require some folding, but I've heard good things about them. I don't have any in my diaper stash, but it seems that you can find some super absorbent bamboo or hemp ones with cute prints on Hyena Cart.
All-in-Ones
Pros:
- The easiest to use.
- Don't need a cover
- Don't need ANYTHING ELSE!
- Take longer to dry.
- Bulkier
- Frumpier
Ok, now you know the difference between the diapers. The next step is deciding on which ones you want to start with. A word to the wise: try a few of each. I bought waaaay too many prefolds and contours to start with and not enough fitteds, which are PERFECT for newborns.
Well, there you have it. I hope this post has helped to alleviate your spinning mind. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Wow! I'm so glad that someone laid it all out for me. I have friends who use cloth diapers, and I never understand the lingo. Thank you! I actually tried cloth diapers when Apollo was a newborn, but they leaked and were a disaster. Maybe its something to consider now that he is older.
WOW! You're amazing! This is awesome. I am completely impressed, Betty's sister is going to use them and she posted some good info too. Someday when I have a kid I think I will try them too, mainly for the cute factor. Love ya sis
Thanks Tammy! I'm here if you ever have any questions!
Rory,
The leaking problems probably had less to do with his age/size and more to do with the type of diaper he was using. Do you remember what the diapers were? As you can see,it's not easy to choose the perfect diaper. One must experiment and do endless research (until one feels thoroughly OBSESSED with diapers)... or you could just ask someone who already knows! ;-)
I didn't even get far into reading your post and I am cracking up :) in a good way of course that you took the time to write a essay on them and use miss bella as your model... so silly. I will red up on it though because even though I thought I knew stuff from heather I still didn't totally understand!
Well, Merry, the questions were coming, so I figured instead of writing a bunch of different emails, I'd kill two birds with one stone! ;-) As you can see, it is pretty intensive! Hope this makes it a bit more clear for all those that are interested!
We used flats on him, which of course were awkward and leaky on a newborn. It's hard when they are that little since their BMs are pure liquid and so explosive. I also didn't want to invest in cloth diapers because he grew so fast (I had to buy the next size up from 1-4, then he finally plateaued- it was mind-boggling). I was worried I would go broke trying to keep him in the right size if I got the fitted cloth diapers. But he has been in size fives for three costco boxes now, and I want to do something more environmentally friendly now that I feel ready. Thanks foor your insight- its awesome.
Ha! I wonder what Bella was thinking as you kept changing her diaper. She looks a bit confused :) But what a perfect little model she was!
Thanks for sharing your in depth knowledge on the world of cloth diapers! What a help! Can't wait to see those cuties on Bella.
I am reading this post for the 12th time and taking notes once again. Who knew diapers would be so confusing! Be expecting a SOS email from me :)
